Degradation‑Modified PS Plastic
Degradation‑modified PS features an “upcycling‑recycling‑oriented” modification concept. By means of photocatalysis, electrocatalysis, thermal catalysis and other approaches, waste PS can be selectively converted into high‑value‑added chemicals such as phenol and benzoic acid. Another technical route adopts anaerobic biodegradation additives. Without compromising PS’s original transparency, mechanical properties and processing characteristics, the modified material can be decomposed by microorganisms into carbon dioxide, methane and humus under anaerobic environments such as landfills and marine conditions.
Main Applications of Degradation‑Modified PS
Disposable Eco‑friendly Products: Adopted for disposable food containers, plastic cups, food packaging, foam boxes and toys. After disposal, these articles can be biodegraded by microorganisms in anaerobic environments including landfills and seawater.
High‑value‑added Chemical Recycling: Based on photocatalytic, electrocatalytic and pyrolysis technologies, waste PS (such as packaging boxes and foams) is converted into high‑value fine chemicals including phenol, hydroquinone, benzoic acid and acetophenone.
High‑performance Functional Materials: Used for polystyrene‑imine aerogel production. This material delivers outstanding thermal‑insulation performance, low density and high mechanical strength for high‑efficiency thermal‑insulation scenarios. It can be depolymerized and recycled under acidic conditions after service life to realize closed‑loop material circulation.
Chemically‑Recyclable Engineering Plastics: Cleavable units such as bio‑based muconate are introduced into the PS main‑chain. While maintaining mechanical performance, the material can be depolymerized under mild conditions of 280‑300 ℃, recovering styrene monomer with purity ranging from 92 %‑98 %.
